It's practically wedding season—even for those of us who don't have the bridal jitters. Being a wedding guest is an honor and always a treat. Thank the couple for asking you to be a part of their big day by adding to the atmosphere they've been dreaming. That means: yes, it does matter what you wear to a wedding, even if you aren't in the bridal party!

 

So what should you wear to a wedding?

Hint: the invitation should tell you.

As follows are some simple guidelines for what to wear to a wedding based off of the type of event the soon-to-be-wed have specified in their invitation, thanks to wedding tuxedo and suit style experts at The Black Tux.

What to wear to a Casual Wedding

– but, not too casual –
Hers: Sundress, or a skirt or pants with a nice blouse; everyday, natural makeup and hair.
His: Dress pants with a button-down shirt or polo.

What to wear to a Semiformal/Dressy Casual Wedding

– think "night on the town"–
Hers: Cocktail dress or a dressy skirt and top.
His: Suit and tie, dark for evening or light (e.g. tan or gray suit) for daytime events.

What to wear to a Beach Formal Wedding

– breezy, comfortable and weather-appropriate –
Hers: Formal (tea or knee length) summer sundress with flat sandals; natural, everyday makeup and hair.
His: Light-colored cotton or linen suit and line shirt (no tie required), linen pants or khakis.

What to wear to a Black Tie Optional Wedding

– dark and sophisticated –
Hers: Long dress, dressy suit or formal cocktail-length dress in a dark, neutral tone (brown, gray or black).
His: Tuxedo (e.g. navy or charcoal suit) or a formal dark suit and tie.

What to wear to a Black Tie Wedding

– basic formal –
Hers: Chic cocktail dress or a long evening gown in a dark, neutral color (brown or black).
His: Black or midnight blue tuxedo, white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie and a white pocket square.

What to wear to a White Tie Wedding

– the ultimate type of formal –
Hers: Full-length ball gown in a neutral color (brown or black); glamorous makeup and dramatic jewelry and hair are appropriate.
His: Tailcoat and black pleated tuxedo pants, white wing-tip tuxedo shirt, white waistcoat and bow tie with back leather shoes.
